Stucco’s Fire-Resistant Benefits: Enhancing Home Safety

Stucco is considerably more fire-resistant than most other exterior finishes or cladding except metal. There are two main fire-resistant benefits of stucco: it resists catching fire and it resists spreading fire, both of which add quite a bit to your building safety. In today’s blog article, we want to talk about how and why stucco is fire-resistant.
Catching Fire
It is hard to light stucco on fire. In fact, stucco will give you about an hour’s time before fire may penetrate a building. That is about an hour more than other types of exterior finishes, the worst of which is probably cedar shakes.
The reason stucco is fire resistant is because stucco is like stone or rock in a paste form. It is comprised of water, sand, lime, and Portland cement, none of which is particularly flammable.
Spreading Fire
So, not only is the stucco not receptive to catching on fire, but it is also not receptive to spreading fire. Cedar shakes, in contrast, would help fire to spread like climbing up a ladder. In spite of stucco, eventually fire will spread starting at the building’s weakest points, like wood or vinyl windows or the eaves or the doors.
However, for the sake of fire safety, stucco is much safer than wood shakes or vinyl siding. If you are considering investing in a new exterior for your home, think stucco, because fire safety is one of its most sobering advantages for your family living inside. Stucco appears very solid on the outside, and that is because it is very solid—and safe.
